(CILT) Advanced Application of a Ship’s Stability Dynamics – Course 2
The course covers the use of Simpson’s Rules relating to a ship’s stability, The Inclining Test, Stability Cross Curves, Radius of Gyration, Synchronous rolling and Parametric rolling, IMO Stability Criteria including Wind Heel, List and Large Angles of Stability, Grain Stability, Longitudinal Stability, Damage Stability, Dry Docking and other factures determining a loss of stability.
The purpose of this course is to teach the practical knowledge and application of a ship’s stability. The aim is:
- To provide an understanding as to how the hydrostatics particulars of a ship’s hull are derived and to furnish participants with sufficient knowledge for them to calculate their own hydrostatic information should the need arise, and
- To provide some practical knowledge of stability for participants to use in their seagoing careers or when dealing with the operational considerations relating to the safety of ships.
The course must be completed within 1 year of the commencement date.
Stability 2 has a pre-requisite of successful completion of Stability 1, or a Certificate of Competency as Deck Watchkeeper or Mate/Master <500GT or equivalent, as a minimum.
Participants who satisfactorily complete the course and provide documentary evidence to satisfy the course pre-requisite will be issued with an AMC Advanced Application of a Ship’s Stability and Dynamics certificate.
A range of methods is suggested for measuring progress towards and achievement of learning outcomes in this module. Knowledge-based criteria will be satisfied through written or oral questioning relating to practical assignments. Skill-based criteria will be satisfied through table top exercises throughout the learning period. Assessment will be undertaken off-the-job; however, where possible the environment will simulate a real work place situation.
