Our friends at the Humanitarian Logistics Association (HLA) are organising a webinar with what3words (w3w) to explore how the innovative 3-word address system is being used in a number of ways across emergency aid, public health and humanitarian operations in different parts of the world.

what3words is a really simple way to talk about location. (It is now being used by emergency services in the UK). what3words have assigned each 3m square in the world a unique 3 word address that will never change. For example ///filled.count.soap marks the exact entrance to what3words’ London headquarters.

51.520847, -0.19552100 ←→ /// filled.count.soap

3 word addresses are easy to say and share, and are as accurate as GPS coordinates. From immediate post-disaster assistance to long-term recovery, what3words can be used in all kinds of humanitarian projects.

The webinar will be presented by w3w’s James Cochrane, Partnerships Manager. This is a great opportunity to know more about this tool, and how logisticians and others can use it in operations.

Topics to be discussed include:

• What is what3words – case studies and how the system works
• Asset location – Geo-tagging & communicating between different teams
• Emergency / Disaster response – setting up teams to report 3 word addresses & respond
• Potential use cases of w3w for COVID-19 (or other such pandemic) response
• Giving physical 3 word addresses
