On 22nd March, India announced its first phase of lockdown. During this first phase almost all inter-state movement of road transport was suspended. Given that about 60% of transport in India is via road, this caused massive supply chain disruption.
To combat this, a group of young officers of the Indian Railway Traffic Service – the civil service responsible for the operation and business development of Indian Railways – decided to create a single window logistics system. Working with start-ups, service minded voluntary organisations, and using the railways as a backbone to provide middle mile connectivity, they created the SETU or ‘Bridge’ project to provide a pandemic resilient supply chain.
