30 August 2018 | Khorgos

Kazakhstan and China are joining forces for the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport’s first Khorgos International Convention. The theme of the event, to be held on 3 September 2018 at IBCB Khorgos, is Logistics & Transport Co-operation for the Belt & Road Strategy.

CILT International will lead Session Three of the convention, entitled Delivering the Belt and Road Initiative in Partnership – Schemes, Skills and Solutions.

The session will open with a presentation by Mr Ian Mills, Ports & Logistics Consultant at Lawrence Mills Ltd. In a presentation entitled The Role of Northern European East-West Connections in the Development of Global Trade, Mr Mills will add a Northern European perspective, and discuss the ramifications and opportunities of living and working at the western end of the Belt and Road. In particular, Mr Mills will focus on how the creation of the belt and road can lead to a paradigm shift in UK national logistics.

Currently the UK receives 90% of incoming cargo through the south coast, yet 60% of this cargo is destined for the midlands and north of the country. Citing the Liverpool-Humber Optimisation of Freight Transport (LHOFT) study being performed by the University of Hull and P&O Ferries, Mr Mills will show there are alternative routes for this cargo to the UK, notably via train from Duisburg up to northern Holland, Belgium and Germany and then onto a ferry into the Humber or Teesport, as well as from Kazakhstan up to the Baltic, and then on a ship to the northern ports.

After Mr Mills, Mr Jon Harris, CILT International Professional Development Co-ordinator, will discuss The Importance of Developing Strong Skills Sets along the Belt and Road, and highlight the need to ensure there is a world-class workforce to match the infrastructure needs of the Belt and Road and Nurly Zhol Initiatives.

Later in the day, Jon will also be running a more detailed workshop focusing on professional development and training, identifying specific areas for ongoing development between China and Kazakhstan, and asking delegates for their key input.

The Khorgos International Convention will take place on the 3rd of September 2018 at IBCB Khorgos, and consider the development of Belt and Road logistics and transport infrastructure, alongside schemes, skills and solutions for delivering the Belt and Road initiative in partnership.

Keynote speakers for the event are Mr. Wang Derong Professor, FCILT Executive Vice-Chairman, China Communications and Transportation Association, Mr. Kevin Byrne Lieutenant Colonel, FCILT International President, CILT, and Mr. Bakytzhan Kuanyshev Professor, Sc.D., FCILT President-Rector, Kazakh Academy of Transport and Communication.

They will be joined by a distinguished selection of session speakers including Song Xuexin CEO, JCtrans Logistics Network Co. Ltd, Zhaslan Khamzin CEO, KTZE-Khorgos Gateway, Shan Yuanzhuang Vice-President, China Association of Policy Science, and Ian Mills Ports & Logistics Consultant, Lawrence Mills Ltd.
